How to Make an Espresso

We recommend using spring water when brewing your espresso as this will render the best cup of coffee.

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Espresso machine with portafilter

  • Grinder
  • Tamper
  • 18-19 grams of coffee
  • Timer
  • Scale
  • Ratio of 1:2 coffee-to-water, though you can experiment with this for taste
  1. Begin grinding fine and dosing your coffee.
  2. Remove your portafilter, and make sure it is free of residue and dry. Zero out your scale about 18 grams of coffee into your portafilter.
  3. Tap the portafilter gently and distribute coffee evenly with your finger. Tamp the portafilter firmly or until it feels as if the coffee is pushing back and make sure your coffee is leveled.
  4. Purge the water in your espresso machine to ensure the water for pulling your espresso shot is hot. Lock the portafilter into group head.
  5. Start your timer and engage your group head. Place your cup under the portafilter. The entire extraction of the espresso shot should take around 23-28 seconds to brew 1.5 oz of espresso. If it extracts too quickly, try a finer grind. If it extracts too slowly, try a coarser grind.
  6. Enjoy your shot of espresso!
